Earth's Rotation and Orbit

1. Click below to watch the video of the Earth rotating.  Can you tell where it is day, and where it is night?

2.  Watch this video about seasons.

3. Review how seasons work with this Earth in Motion Game.

4. In a comment below, explain why we have day and night, AND why we have seasons.
You should:
-  write in your OWN words, in complete sentences
- write at least 3 sentences
- use these words: rotation, axis, and orbit

  1. There are seasons because the earth is tilted on its axis. The rotation of the earth is around its axis. When the earth orbits around the sun, the sun hits a part of the earth harder than the other part. beatrice

  2. The seasons change because the Earth tilting. The Earth orbits around the sun and rotates around its axis. This is what causes the 4 seasons.

  3. We have day and night because the Earth orbits around the sun. It rotates on its axis. We have seasons because the earth's axis is tilted. Sometimes the sun is in the direction the earth is pointing, other times it is not. This gives us the seasons.

  4. We have day and night because the earth rotates around its axis. One rotation of the earth around its axis takes 24 hours. The sun stays in the same position while
the earth rotates from west to east for rising and setting.
We have seasons because the earth axis are tilted by 23 degrees. The earth orbits around the sun and therefore different parts of the earth receive less and more sun.

  6. We have day and nigh because the Earth is tilting. So it orbit around the Sun
and bye changing position it causes the season.

  7. We have day and night because the Earth rotates on its axis around the sun. The sun shines on the part that is turned toward it. The seasons change because the Earth orbits around the sun so the seasons change.

we have day and night because the Earth is tilted by its axis . Sometimes the northen
hamosphire has day because its tilted and it is
closest to the sun.the reason we have seasons is
Earth orbits around the sun and since it is
tilted, north has summer and the south has winter because south is the other side. Then the
Earth keeps revolving around the sun and the north part has fall and the south part is spring and it keeps going for ever.

  12. It takes the earth 24 hours to rotate ones. The axis is an invisible line that goes through the earth. It takes 365 days the earth to orbit around the sun.

  13. We have the seasons because the earth tilts on its axis so half of the earth is day and the other half is night as it turns around on its axis. The earth is also moving around it its orbit around the sun at the same time. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!=NICO

  14. We have day and night because Earth rotates on on a imaginary line called axis. Earth takes 24 hours to spin one time.Earth seasons form from Earths tilting on the axis.If it is summer days are longer. If it is winter days are shorter.

  15. the earth turns around the axis day and night . One day one spin, two days two spins, three days three spins. Earth's seasons are caused by by earth's tilt. instead of going up and down, earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees. The earth when it goes around it means that it is orbiting. when the earth orbits the sun, it changes seasons. giangiacomo

Seasons are caused by Earth's tilt on his axis.Because of Earth's tilt the amount of anergy coming from the sun is changing during the year. FS

Earths seasons are cased by Earths tilt.Earths axis tilt. The Norther Hemesfiar is not locking at the sun.

  20. The four seaons exist because the axis of the Earth is declined. That's why the Nothern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere don't get an equal amount of sunlight. While the Earth orbits the sun it rotates; the side that gets to face the sun has daytime while the other side has night time.

  22. We have day and night because the earth is rotating on its orbit. The earth is round and, because of that the sun does not shine at the whole earth. Also because the earth is rotating the sun can not shine on the earth, it can only shine on one side of earth.
We have seasons because the earth is tillted on its axis so only one part of earth gets a lot of sunlight. The sunlight is changing everything. For example if there was no sunlight the whole earth would have winter. The place where it is summer gets more sunlight then the place where it is winter. It is all because the earth is tilted. I have a question that i hope you can answer. Why don't we feel that the Earth is tilted?

  23. When the sun hits the northern hemisphere it is summer there, then the southern hemisphere has winter. When the sun hits the southern hemisphere it is summer there, then it is winter at the northern hemisphere. We have day and night because of the sun. If the sun hits the north side then it is day there, and then night is at the south side. If the sun hits the south side then it is day there, and night at the north side.

  24. Earth's seasons are caused by the Earth's tilt on it's axis. Seasons are caused by the sun's warmth hitting in one place. Earth's axis is a little bit tilted instead of being strait up and down.

  25. We have winter and summer because the Earth's is tilted on its axis. It is summer in the Pole nearer to the sun. It is winter in the opposite Pole. It is spring and autumn when the equator is pointing toward the sun. The Earth turn on its axis and rotate around the sun in a orbit. We have day and night because of this rotation. We have day in the part facing the sun and we have night in the opposite side.

  26. We have day and night because the Earth rotates on its own axis once every 24hours. We get seasons because of the tilt of Earth at 23.5 degress.

  27. We have seasons because the Earth rotates around the axis. Because of the tilt of the axis the Earth gets the different amount of the sun in different parts. We have days and nights because the Earth spins around the axis. The sun shines on one part of the Earth that is facing the sun. The other part is dark.

  28. We have day and night because of Earth's rotation on its axis. Let's say America is looking at the sun and Europe is not. That means that in Europe it's night and in America it's day. As Earth continues its rotation in America it's night and in Europe it's day. That's why there is day and night.

We have seasons because Earth orbits around the sun. The Earth is not straight but is tilted on its axis. So if the Southern Hemisphere is pointing toward the sun it means it's summer there. The Northern Hemisphere is then pointing away from it and that means it's winter there. That's why there are the four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

  29. There are two different kinds of Earth's rotation.

First kind is when Earth rotates around its axis. It shows its different sides to the sun. When the sun lightens one of the Earth's sides the day comes, then Earth continues to rotate and light disappears, it becomes dark and the night comes.

Second kind is when Earth rotates on its orbit around the sun. When earth comes closer to the sun it becomes warmer and spring and summer begin. When Earth runs away from the sun it becomes much colder and autumn and winter come.

    Thank you,
    Andrey

  30. There is night and day because of earth's rotation. When the Earth is facing to the sun it is day but when it is facing away it is night. There are seasons because of Earth's revolution. When a hemisphere is pointed away from the sun it is colder because the light needs to pass sideways, that means winter. When a hemisphere is pointed towards the sun it is summer because the sun rays are hitting directly at the hemisphere.

  31. Ok so there are two parts of earth called the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. They are split in two by an imaginary line called the Equator. The seasons are caused by the earths tilt. So when the northern hemisphere gets more direct sunlight from the sun the northern hemisphere would have summer wile the southern hemisphere is having winter because it doesn't get as much sunlight as the northern hemisphere. Do you know the reason the Equator is so hot? Its because the Equator is directly, directly and always facing the sun.

    Thank You

  32. The seasons are pretty cool with the axis being involved. The axis causes the earth to tilt so part of the earth gets direct sunlight and the other half gets less sunlight. Day and night is caused by the earths rotation.

The earths orbit also causes the seasons. Since the axis is tilted when it travels around the sun different halves of the earth get sunlight at different times of the year.

  33. seasons are caused by the tilt. there is day and night. when the earth is facing toward the sun we have day. when is night the earth is facing the opposite direction. there is the north part of the earth and the south. if in the north part they are having winter, in the south part they will have summer. the equator is the hottest place in the earth because is in the middle of the earth. but in the north pole and in the south pole is cold because one is on the top and the other is down. the revolution is when the earth is travelling araund the sun and it takes one year. the rotation is when the earth spins and it takes one day. thank you!
